Potable Water Treatment

Orthophosphate:
Orthophosphate is an anodic corrosion inhibitor that is commonly used in potable water systems. It effectively inhibits corrosion of carbon steel, lead, and copper. It is often used to reduce lead solubility by the formation of a lead orthophosphate film. This allows for less lead contamination and reduces maximum contaminant levels (MCL’s) for regulatory requirements. Orthophosphate eliminates or minimizes red water deposit formation and works in combination with other inhibitors.

Polyphosphates:
Polyphosphates are sequestering agents that remove “red water” from source supplies as well as stabilize iron, manganese, and calcium in potable water systems. Polyphosphates are multipurpose in application as they stabilize water systems to minimize or prevent scale and iron deposits in system piping where pre-existing deposits occur. Polyphosphates act to slowly remove these restrictions and help restore hydrolic efficiency to the system. Stains and discolorations from corrosion products are equally removed along with improving the aesthetics of the systems.

Zinc-orthophosphate:
Zinc-orthophosphate is an excellent corrosion inhibitor to eliminate or minimize red water problems associated with the corrosion of iron. Zinc-orthophosphates work differently from polyphosphates in that they are not sequestering type inhibitors. Instead, it produces a microscopic film on metal surfaces that acts as a barrier to corrosive environments that would normally cause corrosion. As a result, undesirable corrosion products such as iron, lead, and copper are not produced and system protection is enhanced. Zinc-orthophosphate is also beneficial in suppressing the release of asbestos fibers from AC piping. It plays a valuable role in potable systems to minimize the release of lead and copper from system piping and help municipal systems meet regulatory requirements.

Ortho-polyphosphates:
Ortho-polyphosphates are used as corrosion and scale inhibitors in potable water systems. Similar to zinc-orthophosphate, this product formulation combines and anodic and cathodic inhibition package for multipurpose protection in the system. Ortho-polyphosphates are typically used in moderate to hard waters for sequestration of calcium carbonate, iron, and manganese. This treatment mechanism can provide corrosion protection to the system as well. Mid South’s ortho-polyphosphate blends remove colored water and prevent the formation of deposits where tuberculation and deposits already exist. Feeding ortho-polyphosphates will slowly remove these deposits while improving system flow and reducing energy cost.

Chloramine Production:
Since the introduction of the total Trihalomethane (TTHM) rule in 1989, many surface water treatment plants and systems that have natural organics in their water supply are adding low dosage levels of Ammonia to comply with Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection By Products Rule (Stage 2 DBP). When low levels of ammonia are added to the chlorinated system, chloramines are produced. Chloramines are a secondary disinfectant and produce less of the disinfection by-products trihalomenthanes [THMs] and haloacetic acids [HAA5]. Chloramines are produced when free chlorine combines with ammonia.

MCT 4119 is a specially engineered product that combines ammonia and polyphosphate in a single product. When it is applied to the system chloramines are produced and the potential to form disinfection by-products are reduced. Since free chlorine reacts with ammonia, less chemical reactivity is exerted on iron and manganese to produce red or black water in the system. However, where these contaminants or high scale potential water occurs, a polyphosphate is needed to stabilize these constituents. MCT 4119 is an excellent product to help provide system compliance for Stage 2 DBP and control troublesome system contaminants.
